National Games – intangible heritage of the people. Exhibition of the painters and graphic artists of Kazakhstan

6 March 2015

The exhibition "National Games - heritage of the people" was opened at the State Museum of Arts named after A. Kasteev to celebrate the 70th anniversary of UNESCO. It will run until the end of March 2015.

Theme of the exhibition is directly related to one of the UNESCO statutory documents – the Convention on the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO in October 2003 and ratified by Kazakhstan at the end of 2011.

The 2003 Convention ensures respect for the intangible cultural heritage and highlights its importance. The Convention obliges States to take necessary measures to ensure the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage and promote cooperation at regional and international levels.

According to the opening speech of Mr. Yuri Peshkov, Culture Specialist of the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office, – national games, as well as any other intangible cultural heritage element, mean the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills – as well as the instruments, objects, artefacts and cultural spaces associated therewith – that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage. Mr. Peshkov also noted the role of the national games for the education of the younger generation in Kazakhstan and expressed his gratitude to the National Commission of Kazakhstan for UNESCO and ISESCO for initiating such an interesting exhibition.
